Descripción : Water deficiency or water stress is a factor limiting the germination and growth of plants. Some species, Such as bean [Rhynchosia minima (L.) DC], demonstrate a certain tolerance to soil moisture limiting conditions. There are interest in this wild species, in particular for its potential as a fodder plant to cushion the shortage of Ruminants during the dry season of the year. The objective of the study was to evaluate the influence of different osmotic potentials On seed germination and on seedling growth of three bean populations. The work was developed in Laboratory conditions. Bean seed collected in three localities of the Nayarit Coastal Plain was used. It was used A completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement A x B; The factor A were the collections and the factor B nine solutions Osmóticas of mannitol. The experimental unit was formed with 100 seeds placed in a "Petri" box, which was deposited in a germination chamber at 25 ° C. The evaluated variables were: percentage of germination, root length and length of stem. The collections of Villa Juárez and El Limón showed to be able to germinate in conditions of low potential osmotic with more than 50% of germinated seeds, although, in general, this condition affected the speed of germination. By on the other hand, this same growth of stem and root decreased. The percentage of germination of bean seeds and seedling development, with low osmotic potentials, could indicate that this species has tolerance to drought in Early stages of growth.
